PORT DICKSON: Astronomy enthusiast in Teluk Kemang has been blessed when they get to witness the Geminid meteor shower with their own naked eyes last night.

According to Baitul Hilal Observatory Unit Head, Muzamir Mazlan, the natural phenomenon that were said to occur once a year could be seen from 10.30 pm. until this morning. Compared to last year, the phenomenon is better to observe because there are less interference from the harsh moonlight.

’This phenomenon occurs when earth enters the orbit in the ‘asteroid belt’ and it takes place when the position of the constellation geminids is already high and is on the horizon. One to three meteors are expected to appear every minute and it is said that 100 to 150 meteors can appear in an hour,“ he added.

Due to the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) in Port Dickson, the number of public attendance of hotel guests that can observe is limited and the observation is done in a closed manner.

Some street lights in the observatory area were also switched off to lessen the light pollution so the public can witness clearly and have a better experience watching the once a year phenomena.

A visitor, Zakinna Wati Ahmad Tarmizi, 33, who came with her family shared their joy when they saw the meteor shower last night.

"I came from Paroi, (Seremban, near here) and thank god, I had the opportunity to witness the phenomenon that shows the power of Allah," she said.
