Islamophobia: stereotype in news story

pix: google

Today im going to talk about stereotype that is portrayed in news story. In a news interview from Sky News from 2 years ago, Nadine Dorries, a British politician, support a complete ban on muslim women’s garment, Burka/Burqa. According to her, this kind of garment is a medieval dress code. Those who are wearing this are considered as primitive, backwards, or old-fashioned.

She also said that muslim women wear it because they are forced to, not because on their own willingness. She basically assuming that muslim women are all controlled and don’t have authority on themselves. Moreover, she claims that the dress code is deliberately meant to cover up women’s beauty AND BRUISES. The way that she said it was like saying that muslim women are oppressed and tortured by the men. She added that muslim women marriage are an arranged marriage because they cannot choose their own husband.

All of her claims are not properly supported with facts. We can clearly see that she is just an Islamophobic person with an intention to spread hate about Islam. Even when she were asked whether she has spoken with any of the women that she mentioned, she dodged it by saying that the question is stupid. If more irresponsible person with power like her speak freely like this, a lot of people will believe this stereotype without a second thought.
